"You smell just like pencil shavings," he once said to her. Remarque loved his pencil, always the kind with a little eraser on top.
He wrote all his novels, including "All Quiet on the Western Front" in long hand, erasing and altering each page meticulously as he went along. A typewriter was too impersonal. "You feel a pencil in your fingers. It becomes part of you," he told Paulette. "He took a long time --over each book.
He let his characters come alive by themselves and he felt that some of himself flowed into them from the pencil," she explains. When he died last year, Remarque had just finished a novel, or abandoned it, as he liked to say, which he left completely to her. Since then, Paulette has been living quietly in New York with a full desk of contracts. The book has already come out in Germany where a quarter of a million copies have been sold and Harcourt Brace will officially publish it here the first week in February. "It's his most personal, most powerful novel," Paulette Goddard says.
"It's about New York. Really it's about E. 57th where we lived for years." Remarque didn't have' quite enough time to choose a title for the book, so, after his death, Paulctte did it for him, "Shadows in Paradise." "The paradise is New York and the people are the shadows. The words come right out of the text," she says of the story of a German refugee who falls in love with both New York and a beautiful young model. Paulette also chose the jacket cover, a sunny view across Central Park.
"It's the way he saw the city. The one they came up with first was too gloomy. You'd have been afraid to have it on your night table," she says. She and Erich Maria Remarque, the wild movie star and the sober writer, may have seemed an odd couple to some, but they were happily married for 12 years, most of them spent in their lakeside home in Switzerland-. "We met in a Hollywood flower shop, and he sent me flowers," Paulette remembers.
"It was four years later when we ran into each other on Fifth Avenue. He asked me to dinner the next Friday night. I had to break a date to go, but after that we always had dinner together."
